IREEM Champions Biomass Development to Support Carbon Neutrality Goals
South Tangerang, 24 September 2025 – IREEM strengthened its commitment to Indonesia's energy transition by joining the ASEAN Biomass Utilization Congress 2025, held at DoubleTree by Hilton Jakarta Bintaro. The event, organized by Broaders Inc, featured a conference and exhibition designed to connect stakeholders, academics, and industry players in the field of biomass development from Indonesia and China.
At this conference, IREEM was represented by Dr. Arief Yunan, who delivered a presentation titled “Local Biomass Development in Indonesia: A Root Cause Perspective on Key Barriers.” Dr. Arief emphasized that biomass plays a vital role in Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions (NZE) 2060 roadmap, contributing not only to energy security but also to rural economic growth and industrial decarbonization. However, he noted that progress is constrained by a set of interlinked challenges — including technical constraints, economic factors, investment and policy barriers, and supply chain uncertainty — which collectively hinder large-scale deployment.
Dr. Arief, who also serves as the Secretary General of the Indonesian Biomass Society (MEBI) described this as a “chicken-and-egg” dilemma, where biomass producers need guaranteed, sustained demand, while industries and utilities require reliable, high-quality, and affordable biomass supply. Overcoming this stalemate, Dr. Arief underscored, requires comprehensive and strategic planning — combining coordinated policies, fiscal incentives, standardized markets, infrastructure investment, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to unlock the full potential of biomass in Indonesia’s energy transition.
In addition to participating as a speaker at the conference, Dr. Arief also visited several exhibitor booths. Aside from establishing relationships, this was also useful for gaining insight into biomass development from industry players, particularly in China.
