National Energy Efficiency Awards 2024: Who Will Represent Indonesia at the Global Level?

South Tangerang – September 19, 2024. After reviewing the proposals and questionnaires from 186 participating institutions for the 2024 National Energy Efficiency Award (PEEN), the judges are now entering the final stage of selecting the top contenders. The PEEN 2024 activities are supported by the UK-PACT MENTARI EE program, implemented by IREEM, in collaboration with the Directorate of Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the UK Government.

In his remarks, Mr. Hendro Gunawan, Coordinator of Technical Guidance and Cooperation at the Directorate of Energy Conservation, stated that PEEN is the highest award granted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to both government and private sector stakeholders who have successfully implemented energy efficiency, conservation measures, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Formerly known as the Subroto Award for Energy Efficiency (PSBE), PEEN has been held annually since 2012.

He further emphasized that improving energy efficiency and conservation is crucial in advancing the energy transition and plays a key role in collective efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This award is intended to inspire participants to continue implementing energy-saving initiatives and to innovate more efficient energy solutions, benefiting not only the energy sector but also the economy and environment. "We hope this award motivates us all to achieve great success, contributing to the prosperity of our nation and country," Mr. Hendro said as he opened the judging session to determine the Top 3 PEEN 2024 finalists.

The judging process for PEEN 2024 took place in person, with participants presenting their proposals. Each was allocated 15 minutes for their presentation, followed by a question-and-answer session where the jury delved deeper into the projects and clarified key points. Judges then evaluated based on predetermined criteria. After all presentations were completed, scores were tallied to identify the winners. The jury also convened to discuss the final assessments and confirm the selection before making their final decision.

The PEEN 2024 jury panel included representatives from a range of government bodies, such as the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud).

Additionally, the panel featured members from energy management and distribution agencies, including the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), the Association of Energy Conservation Experts (HAKE), the Indonesian Energy Conservation and Efficiency Society (MASKEEI), the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI), the Indonesian Coal Mining Association, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI).

The academic sector was also represented on the jury, with experts from the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed), PLN Institute of Technology (IT PLN), and Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN).

PEEN 2024 also introduced a new category, “Compliance with Energy Management Implementation in the ESDM Sector.” A total of 186 proposals were received across various categories: Energy Efficient Buildings (8 proposals), Energy Management in Buildings and Industry (163 proposals), and Energy Savings in Government Agencies (13 proposals). The winners of the Energy Efficiency Award will be announced in conjunction with the celebration of the Mining and Energy Anniversary.

Winners of PEEN will also have the opportunity to compete at the ASEAN level through the ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA), Southeast Asia’s highest accolade recognizing outstanding contributions to energy sector development and cross-sector participation within the ASEAN region.
